This is just a plain version of the Totoro bonnet in my own hand-dyed superwash Merino wool sport weight.

Gotta test that pattern! I don’t usually offer patterns in different sizes. This is a lot more work. Heh.

It’s great in this yarn, too. It’s a little more substantial than the delicate Knit Picks Ambrosia and would make a super winter hat.
I’ve worked out the pattern and sent it off to Amy so she can knit one for her gorgeous babe and perhaps get us a modeled shot.
Thank you for all your votes on the dye kit instructions. They’re all set in full color PDF and B&W for printing versions.

-made from 1 ball Knit Picks Ambrosia- 80/20 baby alpaca/cashmere and bits of black and white for face
-my own pattern- definitely a prototype, as I have no baby to try it on
This is knit from the top down, starting with a figure 8 cast on and increasing 2 stitches on each edge. There are decreases for the nape of the little baby’s chicken neck. Increase lines come to points with attached i-cord to tie under chin. This was knit to match the shape of another baby bonnet I had on hand, so hopefully it will fit an actual baby. I very much hope it does, because it’s a really simple and elegant way to knit a bonnet and that little decrease line at the back of the neck is killing me.
I fussed and fussed over the eye embroidery. Duplicate stitch just didn’t make a round eye, so I tried a single crocheted spiral, starting with a black center dot. It looks like crewel embroidery. Is that done with a crochet hook? I have no idea. At any rate, the eye is round, the face resembles Totoro, and a mom who loves baby hats with ears is going to be pleased.
