Cast on 44 sts. and join
Knit 2" 2x2 rib
Knit 4" stockinette
Knit a piece of contrasting scrap yarn across half of the sts. This is
where your heel will be.
Go back to where you left off with your sock yarn and knit across the
scrap yarn sts.
Continue knitting for 4.5" (or go longer or shorter, depending on your
foot length).
Toe:
Decrease round, starting on the sole of the sock, which you can find by
looking at your scrap yarn placement for the heel. Those 22 sts. are the
sole. Have your sts. lined up on the needles so that all the sts. for the
sole are facing you.:
Knit 1, SSK, knit across to last 3 sole sts. K2TOG, K1. Repeat with instep
sts.
Knit 3 rounds plain, then do the decrease round again. Continue doing your
decrease rounds, separated by plain rounds as follows:
2 plain rounds, dec., 2 plain, dec., 1 plain, dec., 1 plain, dec. 1 plain,
dec. Now, decrease every round until you have 12 sts. left. Graft with
kitchener stitch.
The Heel:
Go back and remove your scrap yarn from the heel sts. Put stitches on your
needles. You'll probably need to pick up a stitch in each corner to
prevent holes, as I did (twist this stitch by knitting it through the
back). Decrease in the first round, just as you did for the heel. Continue
making another toe, ending at 14 sts., if you picked up a stitch in the
corners when you started, or 12 sts. if you didn't. Graft with kitchener
stitch again.
